Choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Each town has its own atmosphere, views and price range.
Here are some of the most popular options.
Positano

Positano is probably the most photographed town on the Amalfi Coast. Those colourful houses cascading down the cliffs towards the sea are exactly what you imagine when you picture this coastline.
However, it is also the most expensive place to stay.
If you want to stay in Positano during peak season, you should ideally book accommodation 6–8 months in advance. There are many luxurious hotels, but they come with a high price tag.
Airbnbs can sometimes be a better option and often place you right in the middle of everything. Just keep in mind that Positano is extremely popular, which means it can feel very crowded, especially during the summer months. Restaurants also get booked up quickly, so it’s always a good idea to reserve in advance if you plan to dine out.
Amalfi

Another great option is Amalfi, which is slightly less expensive than Positano but still very central.
This is actually where we decided to stay, and for a short trip it turned out to be the perfect choice. Amalfi has a lively atmosphere, beautiful architecture and easy access to other towns along the coast.
There are a few hotels, but again Airbnbs are often the best option.
One thing to remember when booking accommodation on the Amalfi Coast is that many apartments are located high up on the hills, which means getting there usually involves a lot of stairs.
And I really mean a lot.
So my advice would be to pack light or travel with hand luggage, because dragging a large suitcase up dozens (sometimes hundreds) of steps can be quite a challenge.
That said, the hospitality is incredible. Italians are warm, welcoming and genuinely want you to have the best experience while visiting their beautiful coast.
Atrani

If you’re looking for something more authentic and quieter, Atrani is a wonderful option.
Located just a few minutes from Amalfi, Atrani is actually one of the smallest towns in Italy. It feels more traditional and less crowded than some of the larger Amalfi Coast destinations.
Because it’s smaller and slightly less touristy, accommodation can sometimes be more affordable, while still offering beautiful views and easy access to Amalfi.
Ravello

For a completely different perspective of the Amalfi Coast, you could stay in Ravello.
Unlike Positano or Amalfi, Ravello is located high above the coastline, which means the views from here are absolutely breathtaking.
It’s known for its elegant villas, peaceful atmosphere and beautiful gardens. Many travellers choose Ravello if they prefer a more relaxed and romantic setting away from the busy seaside towns.
My personal recommendation:
If you’re visiting for just a few days like we did, staying in Amalfi is a great balance — central, lively and slightly more affordable than Positano.
